Ian G
I installed X-Plane 9 on my new laptop last night and the installation went fine but the program fails to start up. It gets through the initial stages including loading scenery etc but then stops, and a message comes up that the program has stopped working. I am attaching three files, which I hope might help with diagnosing the problem (the tech-spec for the computer, the 'Log.txt' and the 'crash_log.txt' files). The 'Log.txt' seems to suggest it's a problem with the video driver but I am not at all expert in these things and have no idea what I need to do about it. I'm not sure whether the 'crash_log.txt' file is relevant since the computer didn't crash, but I'm including it in case it might be helpful. I hope someone can help advise about this and that it will be possible to do something to make the computer run X-Plane. Please explain any solutions in layman terms since I am most certainly not an expert on computer matters. I am OK with X-Plane 9 itself, having been running it on my earlier computer for several years. Thanks in advance for your help, Ian.
chris k
Your suspicions are correct. No Video Card Drivers installed/detected. Xplane reports 'generic' drivers, meaning that it cannot properly talk to your "AMD Radeon HD 6490M" (the video card listed on your product listing you attached above). OpenGL Vendor : Microsoft Corporation OpenGL Render : GDI Generic OpenGL Version : 1.1.0 (110) Check for a DVD or CD which came with your computer called "Drivers" or "Support Software" or something along those lines. Failing that, Contact HP and ask them to help. Since it's a new Laptop, you should have support. - CK.

[/quote] Thanks Chris, Does this mean there is a fault with the computer? You advise about asking HP support to help me install the video drivers that come with this computer, but this sounds as though these video drivers should already be installed. I'm sorry if I am misunderstanding, but I did warn that I wasn't expert on computer matters. I hope you can clarify a bit more since I want to understand the situation better before contacting HP support. Thanks again, Ian.

There are no video card drivers installed. HP should have done that before selling it to you. I will check through the discs that came with the computer when I'm back home this evening, and then probably get on to HP if I need advice about installing the drivers. I'll let you know if I get it sorted, anyway. Best wishes, Ian.
brett s
Get them from ATI's website, they'll be more current than anything HP might offer anyways. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx Edit - you also need to update to the current sim release... Ian G
Thanks for all the helpful advice. The diagnosis was correct since I've now installed a video card driver and X-Plane is running fine. I've also followed Brett's advice and updated to X-Plane 9.7. Thanks and best wishes, Ian.
