Md-902 Explorer

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working on an MD-902 Explorer for X-Plane. At the moment, I have a 3D model of the cockpit, interior and exterior that is 95% done. Just got a few bits to tweak. Next is texturing and then animations. To get to this point has taken me about 1.5 months so far, I haven't counted the hours, but I would have thought between 80-100.

We already have an excellent HEMS helicopter in the form of Nils BK117 so I plan to make this more of a Police focused helicopter with front and rear observers with video screens in the co-pilot seat and in the back. I also intend to add a FLIR camera and night-sun spotlight. It will have a full custom 3D cockpit and I will also produce a HEMS interior and possibly a VIP interior with leather seats and a wide-screen TV :-) I also plan to produce between 6-8 different liveries.

Here's a few screenshots to show the progress to date.

Thanks guys. I'm more than happy to take suggestions or requests for liveries etc.

Here's a few more blender shots.

Thanks very much. There's still a few instruments to add to the panel. I'm just about to start on UV mapping and trying to work out the best map to use as I plan to ship this with a paintkit too, looking forward to seeing some textures on this bird! In the mean-time here's a shot of the 'FLIR' camera and 'Nitesun' spotlight.

Hi SeaRider, thanks very much.

It's a tough one. At the moment I've got the flight model working with an invisible tail rotor, this is all good and well with engines off, but when they're running the tail rotor spinning is still visible and if I reduce it in size, so it's hidden in the tail, then it's not powerful enough! I need to look further into the flight model to see if I can hide the spinning tail rotor texture. I know Brett has done some work on this using a wing in the right position and a yaw puffer. The members on this forum are very helpful, however I'm not expecting any free help on this project as I'm eventually planning on releasing this as payware. But I might try and do a similar thing to Nils, offer a free copy of the helicopter in return for some minor development help. At the moment the sim can't model NOTAR accurately, so I'll see how I can work round this when I get further down the line.

Just started texturing this afternoon!

Hiding a tail rotor works just like any other part, either via the "show part" menu or transparent textures.

I'd probably try a combination of hidden tail rotor(s) & wing(s), maybe a bit of puffer as well. Assuming you aren't going the plugin flight model route anyways...

Wander off long enough and you're bound to miss something. I, for example, had no idea this one was in the works. I just posted a livery for Nils' BK 117. If you're putting together a paint kit, I'd love to take a crack at this one for you. I'm assuming, of course, it'll be a while before we're flying it. ^_^
As a matter of opinion, I'd love to see the luxury interior for it. Sometimes you just want to fly somewhere without having the pressure of needing to save the world in one way or another. A standard, private chopper would be sweet. But, I'll take it any way you make it!

DMO, looks nice, but yeah . . . you should probably post your stuff elsewhere. A bit confusing otherwise. ;)

Hi, thanks very much for the offer. I do plan on producing a paint kit for the explorer when it's released. I'm UV mapping at the moment and trying to work out which livery to do as the main one, I'm thinking of the one in my profile <--- Any other requests?

When the VIP interior is finished, I'll post some pictures here for you! :)

I know this is slightly off-topic, so my apologies, I'm working on the MD 520N, didn't know anyone else was working on a NOTAR, since it's not on the download page, so I decided to try to build one myself, not good at building exact, but close, I was actually looking for a way to completely hide the tail rotor, it's hidden in Plane Maker, but it still show the tail rotor in X-Plane when running though, but when stopped, it's not there, how can I completely make it "invisible"? Please PM me as well, thanks.

You need to find the file 'prop.png' and make it transparent.

Really great work!!!
Was also waiting for the MD902 and MD520.
If you will share them, I'll try to paint them in Belgian Federal Police colors, if its ok..

Thanks for the enormous work!!!

A little bit more progress on the textures, here's a few screenshots. A few of the liveries I'm planning are here too. Still a lot to do, the rotor head isn't textured yet and I've blanked out the windows for the shots. Please note these shots were taken on my laptop, only running medium res. Hope you like! All suggestions welcome.
