news release from Vmax Flight:

Vmax Flight LLC and Vmax Aero Systems International are proud to
announce development of the first realistically-modeled aerobatic
simulation for the X-Plane simulation platform, "The Patty Wagstaff
Extra 300S."

Patty Wagstaff is one of the world's most popular airshow performers
and an international ambassador to aviation. She is a six-time member
of the US Aerobatic Team and has won the gold, silver and bronze medals
in Olympic-level international competition. Patty is the first woman to
win the title of US National Aerobatic champion and one of the few
people to win it three times. Patty flies a thrilling, low-level
aerobatic routine before millions of Airshow spectators each year. Her
breathtaking performances give spectators a front-row seat view of the
precision and complexity of modern hard-core aerobatics. Her smooth
aggressive style sets the standard for performers the world over.

The Extra 300S aerobatic aircraft, built in Dinslaken, Germany by Extra
Flugzeugbau, combines superb quality, maximum performance and
impeccable engineering into an aerobatic legend. With state-of-the-art
carbon fiber wings, tail and control surfaces, a steel tube fuselage,
and is powered by a Lycoming Thunderbolt 360hp engine, the 300S is the
only factory-built aircraft to consistently win against the fabled
aerobatic specials of the former Eastern Bloc.

Vmax now brings the performance of the Extra 300S along with the
precision flying skills of Patty Wagstaff to the X-Plane platform... in a simulation of her Extra 300S licensed and tested by Patty herself.Over the past years X-Plane is earned the reputation among flight simulation enthusiasts worldwide for accuracy in it's flight modeling and performance characteristics of it's simulated aircraft. The Patty Wagstaff Extra 300S will take advantage of these capabilities in X-Plane to create a simulation that accurately maps the aerodynamic forces that exist in hard-core aerobatics.

Stay tuned for more information on product features and the expected release date. In the meantime watch Patty introduce the product and see an example of the kind of precision flying she does with this amazing aircraft. I'll be interested to see what comes of this (in fact, I'll be interested to see what it actually is— aircraft? Aerobatics plugin? Both? Including small scenery?), but...
Hey MS, you ain't...
... let's not go there again. It's dull and repetitive.

The EXTRA 300s is, perhaps, the quintessential aerobatic aircraft; seeing it under the control of someone with the skills of Patty Wagstaff only makes it look all the more impressive. When I first installed Micro Sloths FSX the EXTRA 300s was the very first aircraft that I tried to fly, and the one that I flew the most ... though the flight dynamics were hardly what one could claim to be in the realm of the realistic (slap the rudder and you can go into a death spin that makes you want to lose your lunch ... but don't worry ... ease back on the stick and you could recover).

The idea of having a realistically modeled 300s for X-Plane is more than intriguing, it is down right exciting - something that every pilot should be looking forward to given that this has become such an iconic plane amongst aerobatic and racing aviators.

Now we must be patient as we await the arrival of this wonderful addition to the X-Plane community; but how patient? It would be nice if there was even some idea as to when the aircraft was going to be released.

Oh well, until then I suppose it will have to be one of those 'patience building exercises' ... humbug.

Hi all,
As main developer in this project, I would like to apologize about the lack of information during this months.
The project is still in progress and it is the first payware project that I accept to work on.
Developing this little aircraft could seems easy to some of you (not many instruments, only one engine, simple shape...).
In fact... this is not...

- As it will be a payware aircraft and especially because Patty will give her expert look on this one, we have to create the best EXTRA300 that we can do... and that is not really easy to do.
- As it is an aircraft supposed to execute extreme figures, the flight model should be very precise.
- As it will be used by non-professionals, the flight model must be usable enough.
- As aerobatics is one of the aerodynamic situation where X-Plane engine does not like to emulate flight model (aerobatic phases have very particular aerodynamic reactions)
- As the entire aircraft will be modelled in 3D (also instruments) and will use manipulators.
- As Patty's cockpit is full of tubes and cables ...

Perhaps, that will show you that it is not the easy project that it is supposed to be at the first look...

As I am talking about looking, take a first look to this project (see below) and be sure that the project is on the run and that I will inform you about it in this thread.

Ok, two "in game" shots as we are testing flight model at the same time
Still uggly but details will come and textures will be re-worked later...

OK Patty is a GREAT pilot but have you ever heard about Catherine Maunoury?
She was several times WORLD Champion (1988 & 2000), with the same Extra 300.

NOBODY can top Betty Skelton and her Pitts

Working on some details:

I've always wondered, what are those things? they look something like winglets and I know it as to do with thew wingtip vortices, but how can it do anything aerodynamically if it's only wire?

The answer is correct.
Many pilots use this tool on only one wing (most of the time they are looking in the same direction automatically), some use one on each wings (Patty's aircraft) often when the aircraft is used by several pilots (school aircrafts).

Lets talk about one more precision:
First, I thought that you were talking about the complex structure fixed at the edge of the wing. This seems to be a structure only used to fix tools. It is used to fix the pitch axe tool, the strobe and nav light but , this one (only on the left wing) has also one more structure on the upper side (axed on an horizontal plan) and electrical links. As I have not ask the question to Patty yet , I suppose it is a structure useful to fix a camera with its electrical connexions (there is also switch for video stuff in the cockpit).

No mahogany in this one, only high-tech fiber ;)

Well, it's time to go inside and begin another nightmare... the 3D panel.

What is the job ? Hmmm, well, here it is:
- Modeling all the analogical instruments in 3D (not the GPS or Storm Radar).
- Get all the manufacturers documentations
- Understand the functions
- Make the instruments closest to the real use.
- Make this instruments relevant to the X-Plane's model reactions

And here is a first preview:

Ok,
As I am working on the 3D animations of the electronical instruments and because it is not a really visual work; lets go and see a little video to show you what kind of manoeuvers will be doable with this Extra300S:

Note that explanations will be given with the aircraft to let you try this kind of extreme aerobatics...
