ChrisOak Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 Hi guys, i'm so fascinated. With Oculus Rift Core 2.0 it's easy to use Windows Desktop inside your Headset and even place seamlessly several windows into your running VR-App. Even the GPS-Screen is suddenly clearly readable without to have bend forward towards the Cockpit-GPS with your Headset if you have it separated as an own x-plane window. From my point of view this is a huge step to solve some disadvanteges inside vr-cockpit and enjoying the flight as never before. I have made a video (not very professionell). But i think it will help you to see the posibilities given by the new Oculus Rift Core 2.0 Operating System in conjunction with x-plane. Let me know, what you are thinking about this features. frenchmetal Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 For those who want to do the same on HTC Vive or any openVR(steamVR) headset you can use OpenVRDesktop : A tutorial and download here : https://github.com/Hotrian/OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal#tutorials
ChrisOak Posted January 13, 2018 Author Posted January 13, 2018 hi frenchmetal, the openVRDesktop is just an overlay and not spatially integrated Object. Please watch my video until the end. This is a crucial difference to openVRDesktop! Regards ChrisOak i7 - 6700K 4,5GHz OC, 32GB, 1080ti, Win10, Oculus Rift S and Valve Index, XP11.newest
frenchmetal Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 Hi ChrisOak I use it since a long time in dcs world look at this video i made some time ago (sorry french)(at 1min23s) I can resize, interact, read PDF, it's a fully integrated windows, it's like a screen in the cockpit but you can attach to a a controller or the headest it's very powerfull.
ChrisOak Posted January 13, 2018 Author Posted January 13, 2018 frenchmetal, you are right! It looks very similar to the rift and even in addition with interaction. One different thing is that Rift core 2.0 is deep native inside the oculus operating system and doesn‘t require additional Software (good for performance, i guess) Undoubtable both solutions are very helpfull and indispensable for vr enthustiastics. i7 - 6700K 4,5GHz OC, 32GB, 1080ti, Win10, Oculus Rift S and Valve Index, XP11.newest
frenchmetal Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 I agree ChrisOak, openVRdesktop takes some ressouces, we can change the refresh rate of the window and put 25 frames per second it's enough for the window. It's really convenient but I hope that eventually we can display the checklists, options, menu etc... on the small tablet that Laminar implemented it would be really great.
ChrisOak Posted January 13, 2018 Author Posted January 13, 2018 Yes! And my goal is, to convince every flihtsim user to try out the overhelming VR experience! We spend much money for useful Software, Planes and Hardware, and it's so fun. But in my opinion it's even more worth to invest the rest of money you have in your pocket to pay for VR. Everyone will gain more for his money then ever. And it's not only for the flightsim, it's to look into another world..... i7 - 6700K 4,5GHz OC, 32GB, 1080ti, Win10, Oculus Rift S and Valve Index, XP11.newest
jml79 Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 There is a new version of open vr desktop display available on steam for a reasonable fee that includes new features like GPU acceleration. It called OVRdrop.

If this could be memorized relative to the cockpit so that on startup it always appeared in the same place... there are some wild things that it could probably do for instrumentation displays. Steve

Steve.Wilson Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 OVRDrop is not, unfortunately, and that's the version that can use hardware acceleration now available for just under $15 on Steam. OpenVRDesktop, by inference, apparently was. That version is no longer being actively developed. Steve

ChrisOak ChrisOak, thank you for an informative video but when I get to the stage of grabbing a window (3:53) the window becomes an "applicationframehost", an orange square on a black background, which I can place in the cockpit but without my window content. Have you any idea what may be the cause please?
John M D Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Christoph, I've since done some more checks and find that I can't actually grab windows at all, the action of pressing the grab button produces the "applicationframehost". The only thing I can grab is the active X plane session which I can manipulate with the thumbstick and place in the cockpit the way you demonstrate with the windows. Similarily I can grab and place a separate GPS window. Obviously I am doing something wrong during the process presumably with the documents windows but don't know what. So near yet so far away. Any help would be much appreciated
John M D Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I've found that by opening my charts in Microsoft Office I can then grab them in the Oculus desk top. I'm now a happy bunny as I can do multiple leg VFR navigation exercises without having to try to remember all the heading changes. As Christoph says incredible!
Mcgen22 Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Have you managed to interact with docked windows while in the cockpit? I have some PDF charts with multiple pages, but can't scroll down.ThanksSent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk X-Plane Fly-Ins: GA0022
John M D Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Going by the video it seems you are limited to only what you can do with the thumb stick once windows are docked but I haven't actually needed or tried that sort of functionality yet.

Interaction is fairly straight forward with the touch controllers, however it is less intuitive using a mouse as the cursor doesn't show up. Hopefully Oculus will add some options for this at a later stage.
