About This File

LiveTraffic fills your sky with live air traffic based on public tracking data requested from OpenSky Network, Open Glider NetworkADS-B ExchangeRealTraffic and/or FSCharter.
It is compatible with X-Plane 11 and 12 on Windows, Mac and Linux. It comes as open source freeware with no guarantees.
A legacy version running on X-Plane 10 is provided separately.

  1. Before even considering using LiveTraffic check out your traffic data options! LiveTraffic requires live traffic data to provide any value. Data is expensive, infrastructure costly. Nearly all traffic data providers have one or the other limitation to protect their infrastructure from misuse or are paid services.
  2. Understand and accept the limitations implied by LiveTraffic's design approach...there won't be planes everywhere, especially not everywhere on the ground.
  3. Verify requirements.
  4. Please reserve 10-15 minutes for the installation, it is more than dropping the plugin into a folder: You need CSL aircraft models to be installed, preferably the Bluebell package.
  5. Follow step-by-step installation instructions (there is a short version for experienced users), there is also a brief video tutorial by B.Sutherland covering the basic setup steps.
  6. Try your first steps with LiveTraffic
  7. Take a look at the comprehensive documentation to enjoy all of its features and find answers to all questions asked so far.
  8. Go here for support.

Brief list of Features (see documentation for more)

  • Processes live flight tracking data from up to 4 sources, two of them free to access (OpenSky and Open Glider Network) (more)
  • Displays aircraft based on CSL models (that you need to install separately!), adds labels, sound, and contrails to them, provides camera view on these aircraft, flight information windows and lists of aircraft (more)
  • Map layer in X-Plane's map showing all aircraft (more)
  • Flight modelling simulates roll, pitch, flare, rotate, ...; gear, flaps, props...; landing, take-off; ground traffic follows taxiways (more)
  • Supports TCAS (both the old way for XP11.41 and below, and the new way as of XP11.50 and above, read background, )
  • Numerous options for other 3rd party plugins to read LiveTraffic's data and even interact with LiveTraffic (more) as well as functions to export tracking data and re-feed it (more)
  • Supports XPMP2 Remote Client for synchronization of traffic across a networked setup or in a TCAS concentrator configuration

Help / Support / Issues

  1. Help menu and [?] buttons right within LiveTraffic.
  2. Search the documentation:
    1. There is a search box in the top right corner.
    2. There are FAQs.
    3. There are Known Issues.
  3. Check your Log.txt file...it's in your X-Plane main folder and just plain text, tips here. It is needed if you ask others for help, so you might as well have a look first.
  4. If all that doesn't solve your problem, turn to the LiveTraffic Support forum.
Please provide your full Log.txt as attachment. No Log.txt -> no help!
If you supply screenshots, which in certain situations is indeed helpful, then absolutely include an Aircraft Information Window in the screenshot. This includes nearly all I need to know to help you quickly, often even from on the road.

For full Change Log see documentation.

I hope you have fun and am looking forward to your review and feedback!

Happy flying!

v3.3.0

What's New in Version 3.3.0

Released

The Update on 03-JAN-2023, archive file name "LiveTraffic_3.3.0a.zip", has no functional changes compared to the upload of 31-DEC-2022, it is still v3.3.0. Only the Linux binary changes, from an Ubunut 22.04 build to a Ubuntu 20.04 build, see here for background.

Update: In case of doubt you can always just copy all files from the archive over the files of your existing installation.

At least copy the following files, which have changed compared to v3.2.x:

  • lin|mac|win_x64/LiveTraffic.xpl
  • Resource/Contrail/ (new folder with 3 files:)
    • Contrail.obj (new file)
    • Contrail.png (new file)
    • Contrail.pss (new file)
  • Users of XPMP2 Remote Client need to update to v3.1.0.

Change log:

  • Contrails for jets flying between configurable altitudes, see Settings > Advanced > Contrails.
Note 1: Contrails use X-Plane's particle system; they have the potential to affect performance.
Note 2: Looks like particles, hence contrails, don't show beyond a certain distance from the camera, probably some LoD optimization by X-Plane; in my tests around 13-17nm.
  • Fixed #244: URL formatting and JSON parsing robust against changes to locale/formatting settings in system or by other plugins.
  • FMOD Error 36: Avoid repeated logging, but provide more details once every 5 minutes if it occurs. Please report occurences here for me to have a chance to find the root cause.

For full changelog see here.

This is a wonderful and pretty amazing little plugin. Delay between the real world and flights displayed within XP is less than a minute and generally speaking the aircraft position and movement is pretty accurate. Startup time is fast even for Mega-Hubs like Frankfurt and usually takes less than 30 seconds, after that you'll see live traffic at your airport. That's very impressive!

Of course there are some drawbacks but you're very open about them (see limitations) and honestly I'd wish for people to read those first, then think about what this plugin actually does and how it works (streaming live and unfiltered ADS-B data - basically relaying live information). Maybe then they wouldn't vote 2* or less.

The only thing I'd love to see fixed is the movement of aircraft (flight modelling). Right now they don't seem to bank/roll just yaw like a car or a train on tracks. But I believe that is on the to-do list already ;) .

Thanks for this plugin and good luck!

Fantastic plugin. I have WT3 and that is a job to set up and run. This plugin installs in minutes start the sim start the plugin and it works straight away

thank you ever so much to the developer this takes xplane to another level.

Works great! I understand the limitations in the source data, so I don't mind some of the bugs that are present, I'm just glad it's easy to work with, easy to start, and is free!

This is an elegant solution to populate sky with live airplanes and is supposed to be easy on frame rate too. I don't mind the aircraft disappear as soon as they land. If I really want to follow airport taxi pattern I could simply switch to WorldTraffic v3. In theory I should be able to fly everywhere and observe the nearby traffic. It is great to see live airplanes on TCAS too!

This plugin is something I've dreamt of coming to X-Plane since I first installed X-Plane 8 umpteen years ago and since installing this plugin I've become virtual plane spotter. Go to any major commercial aviation hub (EGLL, OMDB for example)  switch to tower view and  sit back and watch the departures and arrivals flow in and out, knowing that it's near real time data you are watching. During the cruise phase of a flight its almost reassuring to hear the TCAS chirp into life "traffic, traffic", indicating you are not alone in the skies.

There are limitations to the data that gets input to the plugin, which results in the odd bit of erratic aircraft behaviour by aircraft depicted by the plugin but I can live with that knowing that its real time data that you are seeing, rather than a predefined time table.  The aircraft generated by the plugin don't know you are there and therefore its easier to give them priority at the threshold, taxing  etc than they collide with you. Its possible to find a gap and safely take off from a busy airport without getting in the way.

Installation is just a matter of drag n drop into the plugins folder of xplane and download the .csl files from the .org and place them in the correct folder location in order for the appropriate livery and aircraft type to be rendered.

Even in its current Beta state is very usable so can't wait to see what else is in store for this plugin.

What a great Plug-in. Does exactly what it says on the tin, it's VERY effective with RealTraffic feeding it data as well. I even started to get traffic at gates and taxiing traffic with that as a data source.

Despite it's well documented limitations, it provides enough traffic at the right moments for me, to make flying immersive. My TCAS is alive, I queue to take off, I'm told I'm number 2 for landing. Love it. It seems much easier to fly an approach in a queue with this as the other 'real pilots' are obviously flying at  the correct speed etc. I always find with other traffic addons I'm either catching the traffic up or they're catching me up.

It's just such a shame that I had to read reviews of one star from what can only be described as people being ridiculous. Leaving a one star review to ask for support, or complaining about a WELL DOCUMENTED limitation is the equivalent of buying a unicycle and then complaining it's only got one wheel. YA THINK!!! Don't be so daft, use the support forum: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/forum/457-livetraffic-support/, read the limitations and then don't be surprised when they actually exist, then leave a proper review once you're ready.

Works really great and at the moment I prefer it over WT3 as it needs not much setting up.....maybe I'm lazy! Really clever plugin. Thanks a lot!! Here's a video of action at Frankfurt Main...

This is great.

Probably a great tectonic change is taking place before our eyes.

But if you are a stickler, you will have to wait.
Take the time to read the comprehensive instruction and you realize both strengths and weaknesses.

Thank you for great support and your willingness to solve problems.

Good luck with your work

The problem with x-plane is that  AI is not the best, x life  does not load correct airlines at certain destination and wt3 cannot load on startup out of the gate, This hopes to solve those problems, but keep in mind that this is using data from Opensky and Adsbsexchange which might not be the most accurate. Twinfan has spent allot of time on this and fixed allot of issues, i cant wait to see what else is in store for Livetraffic.

By far the best AI traffic plugin available, I own both World Traffic 3 and X-Life Deluxe and hands down this is the easiest to use.

Wow. Been waiting for an integration product like this for 15 - 20 years. It is amazing to set your browser to Live ATC and do some virtual plane spotting. This plugin really works!!! Would love to see sounds added. Everything else that might be nice are limitations of the program (taxi to and from gate, following taxiways and landing on the correct spot on rwys). You've really done an amazing thing TwinFan! Thank you.

Based on the stage this is at, it is excellent. Just done my first flight and looking at my TCAS and then Planefinder to work out who is around me was great!

I'm very impressed by this plugin - it's very well designed, well maintained (so far) and works as expected.

I like that it's relatively easy on resources and offers quite a bit of flexibility for tweaking here and there.

I've used the equivalent in P3D, and have been delighted to find this in X-Plane. Not at the same level yet, of course, but clearly on the way, potentially even better.

I really like the way that it fires up right away; by the time I've set up my payload and fuel, and ready for the walkround, the airfield is populated. I'm very pleased to see a historical data option, essential for someone in the UK who wants to fly Down Under, and that facility became unavailable in the P3D version.

I'd like to see the feature that 'kills' aircraft when you come in contact with them, very useful for getting in line for departure at somewhere like London Heathrow, but I'm sure that will come in time.

Sincere thanks to the author for their expertise and commitment.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Installation was simple with clear and concise instructions.  Worked on first launch.

Not 100% perfect yet but now the skies and airports are full of life at VERY minimal FPS hit.

Thank you and I look forward to any improvements in this great plugin.

An absolute surreal plugin. I can't even believe this was possible on XP. Please dev team, work hard on this gem! This is EXACTLY what XP has been lacking for years: a truly inmersive AI plugin.

What's next for the plugin? Can't wait for it!

This plug in does exactly what it says it does. Anyone giving it a low star rating clearly has not taken the time to read the docs.

Thanks TwinFan and all your testers.

LiveTraffic adds outstanding realism to X-Plane, really one of my top add-ons! Very reliable, great performance and a perfect manual helping for the installation and setup. Top, not a single flight without LiveTraffic from now!

Fantastically fun addition to add a lot of fun and immersion. Becomes addictive! Last night I “rode along” with a Beech Twin doing touch & goes at a local GA airport. And it really brings an airport alive. Downside is that I now need to be a bit more careful on pushback, plus have to wait in line at takeoff. 😂

Really great support by the author. I had an issue using the newest version with X-PLANE 11.41 and the author sent me a fix within hours! Fantastic support! And a truly great add-on!

Thanks a lot!!!!

It works well on Linux Mint 19.1 and X-Plane 11.41 after following all instructions.

That's a very good add-on.

Because of your original question over the use of live traffic, persistence and ingenuity I would like to thank you and the team that helped for developing this marvelous plugin! I love the fact that it has 0 impact on FPS, there's normally a trade off with these things and this is just fantastic to have some real planes flying around.

Great if you know someone getting on a flight, you can literally fly with them!
