About This File

The Supermarine Spitfire was the most widely produced and strategically important British single-seat fighter of WW2. The Spitfire, renowned for winning victory laurels in the Battle of Britain (1940–41) along with the Hawker Hurricane, served in every theatre of the war and was produced in more variants than any other British aircraft.

The Spitfire Mk IX was originally developed as a stopgap measure as a response to the appearance of the Focke-Wulf FW 190A. The aim was to fit the Merlin 61 engine to a Mk V fuselage while making as few changes as possible. The first test aircraft flew on 26 February 1942. It was so successful that it was ordered into full production as the F Mk IX. Progress was rapid, and full production began in June 1942. Production of the LF Mk IX initially ran in parallel with the Merlin 63 powered Marks. This version first became operational in March 1943 with the Biggin Hill Wing. The HF IX was powered by the specialised high-altitude Merlin 70 and entered service in the Spring of 1944.

This model was originally designed by Heinz Dziurowitz of myvirtualhanger with art work by Will Davies and was distributed as payware. X-Plane.org now have the copyright for this aircraft and have given permission to make a V11 version freely available to all members. Heinz has now sadly passed away, but all credit for the original work goes to him and Will - truly excellent work.

The main updates for V11 are: all textures now 2048 pixels; NML PBR created for all key textures; canopy recreated with PBR and internal reflections; gunsight fixed; weapons layout updated for Mk IX and repositioned; weapons updated to non-binary; bombs converted to objects and textured; guns and cannons setup adjusted; 2nd Landing Light now functioning; Ident Light positions adjusted and new prop textures. Many other tweaks too.

Huge thanks to X-Plane.org - particularly for allowing this aircraft to be released as freeware.

Original research and design: Heinz Dziurowitz of myvirtualhanger and Will Davies.

XP11 Version: domhenry

Quick Take-off Guide:

1. Stick back and centre to keep the tail wheel on the ground for slow speed steering.

2. Brake off.

3. Ease up the throttle.

4. Tail wheel is forced to the ground - so steer with whatever you have for the wheel (twist joystick for me).

5. Ease up the throttle and get a bit of speed up - stick forward to centre - tail wheel lifts - ease more throttle.

6. Now you’re steering with the rudder - ease more throttle - slowly..... too much and torque will have you.

7. Pull back slowly and you’re airborne...

8. Gear up

9. Enjoy.

PS - there re a couple of bugs currently accepted and open with XP - landing lights visible through wings - cannons no sounds...

These bugs are on all XP aircraft not just this one.

hey man this is an amazing aircraft. thanks for making it.

have you thought of doing a p-51 mustang? so far i have looked all over freeware and no one has been able to make a good one.

so just to challenge you, i think you could do a great job at it, and it would help out the people like me who don't want to pay for something like that.

thanks again domhenry.

I am very happy with the Spitfire it is amazing, the sound of the engine is very realistic, I love it, keep it up, I love your work. You're a machine !!

Response from the author:

Sorry - but I have never seen that behaviour. XPlane does have some weapons problems - not specific to this aircraft. The fix seems to be to load an aircraft with no weapons - and then restart the sim and try the weapons again.

It's wonderful to have Heinz's Spitfire brought up to operational status in X-Plane 11. Thank you Dom and Nicolas for making this a reality.

FYI for anyone downloading this aircraft, all of the liveries created by @amerrir can be used with this updated aircraft package.

Response from the author:

Yes indeed - the map from old folder to new folder is in the manual.

Was really struggling with a MK1 version of the Spitfire that I had downloaded and then found this MK IX and what  difference in all aspects, so am looking forward to improving my flying skills with it. Many thanks for this excellent "freeware"

This is very good Spit, nice job. I have already gotten 1 or 2 kills.😄 Good job with the cannon being rockets. ( Wouldn't have thought of that😉)

It is probably just me. I have always had a devil  of a job taking off and landing one of these. But recently I discovered something to lift my spirit. 😀 I installed this new X-plane 12. also with the  upgrade for NVIDIA drivers. Nvidia is finally working, phew. Without the driver upgrade XP12 wouldn't work.

AND I COULD NOW take off and land in a Mk1 spit. Thank you X-plane a/c creators.  My hope is re established.

Some out there in my old combat flight squad  know that I had trouble with the spitfire. Aircraft carrier work wasn't so bad strangely enough.

So I am looking forward now to more practice. Thank to all

Been thinking about loading a Spitfire for sometime after getting to grips with other light aircraft. This was easy to load on my new Mac and performs well. Looking forward to managing smooth takeoffs and landings.

I haven't taken her up for a spin yet but from what I know of domhenry, Heinz Dziurowitz and Will Davies work I will be enjoying this 'Spit MK IX', as I take her out for her first spin and 'victory roll' in memory of Heinz and family and friends over Biggin Hill Tower !

Thanks once again and R.I.P Heinz.

Very good aircraft, I can see lots of attention to detail and hard work went into the making of it. The one thing that confuses me is that even when I turn on the "Cannon" switch, the cannon won't fire. Why is that? Is there something I'm missing? Thank you!

Love this aircraft! The sounds and visuals are amazing! It's difficult to take off, but once you're in the air, it's really fun and easy to fly! Many thanks.
