About This File

3jFPS-wizard11   - keep good FPS and enjoy smooth flying -

This is for X-Plane 11. A version for XP12 will follow, probably at the end of the XP12.0 beta cycle.

I know quite a few people are waiting for an XP12 update and I am already working on it. : )
But please understand why I won't release it in the early beta phase.

There will be many significant changes between the beta versions, which could break the plugin any time and lead to many problems.
The beta phase is for the LR devs to iron out as many bugs, glitches and performance killers of their own code.
Plugins (somewhat illegally) manipulating the internal workings of the sim aren't too helpful in that regard, at least until we're getting close to a final release and changes between betas become smaller.

Also, I don't want users to report bugs to LR that are caused by my script. I assume they get enough reports for their own bugs already.  ; )

If you follow this download page, you will get notified as soon as 3jFPS for XP12 will be released and I'll be happy to help with your sim performance.  : )

This FlyWithLua script is an advanced version of my plugins 3jFPS-control and 3jFPS-wizard

+ keeps performance stable by auto adapting view distance, cloud quality, anti-aliasing and scenery shadows

+ very smooth transitions to make visual effects barely noticeable

+ easy configurable with settings windows

+ wizard mode guides you to find your best configuration

+ change settings during flight and see immediately what you are doing

+ nice graphical and/or numeric FPS Display

+ NEW FEATURE: you can set up 4 profiles with different settings for different situations (e.g. VR and non-VR)

DISCLAIMER:

This plugin uses some inofficial control parameters (so called "DataRefs") of X-Plane.
These inofficial DataRefs are undocumented and can change with every release or update of X-Plane.

When you install this plugin, please keep that in mind and don't blame the developers of X-Plane, FlyWithLua or me, if the plugin stops working with a later Version of X-Plane. : )

Compatibility

+ for X-Plane 11.xx
+ NOT compatible with any other "auto-LOD" plugin (like AUTO_LOD1.3 or 3jFPS-control)

Installation

+ install current version of FlyWithLua (any edition of FlyWithLua will work, but I recommend "FlyWithLua NG"), if you don't have it already.
   download here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/38445-flywithlua-ng-next-generation-edition-for-x-plane-11-win-lin-mac/

+ install my library 3jLib1 version 1.7 or higher:
   download here: http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/34720-3jlib1-ui-extension-library-for-flywithlua/
   copy
jjjLib1.lua to '/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Modules/' folder (not '.../Scripts/' folder!)

+ download 3jFPS-wizard11.lua from this page and copy it to '/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scripts/' Folder

Usage

Click on the FPS display (on the upper left corner) to open the settings window.
Or click in menu -> "Plugins" -> "FlyWithLua Macros" -> "3jFPS-wizard11: open/close settings"

The settings window should be mostly self explanatory. It has 4 sections:

On top you can select the plugin mode
+ AUTO: The plugin tries to keep your FPS stable. This is the default option.
+ MAX FPS: Visual quality is reduced to minimum, therefore FPS should reach their maximum value.
+ MAX QUAL: Visual quality is set to maximum, therefore FPS might go down a lot.
+ OFF: Bring X-Plane back to it's original state (as if the plugin was not installed)

Just Below you can select the current profile
+ There are 4 different profiles: A, B, C and D
+ The highlighted button shows the active profile
+ When you change and save settings, you always only change/save the active profile
+ You can set any of the 4 profiles as Default for VR and non-VR

In the middle you can adjust the FPS-Display

At the bottom you can open one of the configuration modes
+ EASY: Find your best settings with a few clicks
+ WIZARD: The wizard guides you through the process of detailed configuration, to help you find the perfect settings for your hardware and taste. <<< RECOMMENDED!
+ ADVANCED: For the nerds who want total control without long explanations.
+ PROFILES: Set default profile(s) for non-VR and VR.

Display size

Under configuration 'ADVANCED' -> 'Display', you can change the width and height of the FPS display. This might be necessary when you are flying in UHD (4k).

Configuration

The FPS-wizard will work as good as you configure it. The default settings are for mid-range hardware and set to my personal taste. So, it is not very likely that they are perfect for you and your hardware. To get the maximum out of the plugin, please take the time and step through the 'WIZARD' configuration pages and follow the instructions.

If you set everything up the right way (again: for your taste, hardware, X-Plane settings, add-ons, ...), the plugin really can do some magic.

But first, you have to set the rendering options of X-Plane to reasonable values for your system.
Setting "Number of world objects" to "maximum" on a lower-end computer for example, will never work*.

* That really would be magic, but, to be honest, the FPS-wizard is not capable of real magic, it's only a bunch of good tricks.  : )

Update from 3jFPS-wizard to 3jFPS-wizard11

If you are using the previous version and want to update, please follow these steps:
1. In case you want to keep your old configuration: Copy (or rename) the file "X-Plane 11/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scripts/3jFPS-wizard.prf" to "
3jFPS-wizard11.prf"
2. Delete file "3jFPS-wizard.lua" (or move it to the
"X-Plane 11/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scripts (disabled)" folder)
3. Install 3jFPS-wizard11.lua as described above
4. Don't forget to try and configure the new features: Auto anti-aliasing, auto scenery shadows off, reduced visibility near ground, adjustable size of FPS display (for 4k monitors)

Thanks for this.

I have a low end system that can just about cope with XP11. Nineteen or twenty FPS usually (don't laugh....).

This utility has made things a lot better.

With a bit of tweaking I am now getting up to six FPS better than my average.

Cheers and Beers

A masterfully well-written lua with an excellent functional UI, good documentation and sane defaults.  By far the most comprehensive addon to dynamically adjust objects and clouds upto the capacity of your system.  Will be appreciated by both novice flyers and old hats.

Recommendation for a future enhancement:

Implement Dynamic Water Rendering.  Now that /private datarefs are accessible through XPLMGet, a starting point for water rendering could be @pilot83's "Water Fix and Default fog control xp11 1.1" , or one of its improved variants like @ioannis's "X11-Water 1.1.1".

Very successful work, number 10, 5 stars. I can't keep it at 30 fps and I get at least 45 fps and the graphics are excellent.

So obvious you wish you had the idea yourself.

Plus it's simple, elegant and comes with a nice GUI and a wizard to set it up.

Really, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want this plugin.

Very clever. Wondering why XP11 doesn't have a native logic like this.

Works nice, I have found I have gained between 2-5 frames on average.  But the whole plugin just makes X-Plane 11 way smoother.

Pretty much the "essential" script available. Keeps your frames good and has nearly no impact on the visuals... Love it.

I have a pretty good PC how ever the components are getting somewhat old,  Usually I play with the max Number of world objects but on approach sometimes I was getting 20-25 fps which isn't great.  However, after I installed this addon I went into a 10 nm approach and set the setting to auto and I was getting about 40-45 fps STABLE.  This addon really helped a lot!

Jorn-Joren,

You are still helping XPers in June 2022.

I fly XP11.55rb, and used 3jFPS, with wizard adjustments. It has worked really well. KEWR, with orthoscenery, can now be used. KSFO, even with MisterX custom scenery, also can be flown. Both previously caused FPS in the single digits, but now I get about 35-40 FPS.

There are other positives:

Using 3jFPS allows adjustments on the fly. Once you set the XP Rendering settings,  your plugin allows a flyer to immediately can see how changes affect FPS. This really enhances the XP experience.

Next, 3jFPS will allows one to make better use of scenery packs.

Finally, you have created a plugin that seems to play well with other addons, whether it's scenery or even utilities. I have read reviews for XPFps, another utility, where users are reporting that your plugin works well with that product.

I was ready to give up with some airports and some custom scenery, but 3jFPS has made it possible to enjoy all those!

This works wonders for Framerates in VR!

I tried other solutions, but for me, this one is the best and also the easiest to install and handle.

Highly recommended for VR flyers!

What a great add-on! I can just press a preset and have complete scenery for general sight seeing/lower fps and another button for max fps for landing. Along with many settings in between. And it all happens immediately without having to stop the sim and going to settings. Still runs smooth enough at the max setting.

Thanks!

I absolutely applaud what you've done. You've made xplane VR actually possible for me to run. It turned from something like 20 fps in the vive to around a constant 45 which is great for VR. Absolutely a must have plugin!

Simply indispensable!

The different profiles are a wonderful idea. An Airliner flying high and fast and glider circling low have pretty different requirements.

Awesome.

I have been using 3j-fps for a year, and just realized it was updated for xp11.

I'm not sure it's the update or my new settings, but it works even better than before.

I still experience FPS drops whenever I pan or zoom too fast (apparently too fast for 3j to adjust), but it's OK.

Too bad so few people know about this. It should be default in XP11.
