This is a link to the whole plane with a 64 bit plugin only, so extract the aircraft to a folder of your choice under X-Plane/aircraft. This adds a lead computing sight for air-to-air combat and CCIP bombing mode. Both modes are very accurate. The sight is focused to infinity even as the pilot moves their head around the cockpit, a first I believe for any X-Plane aircraft. For now, please use one of the FOV values as follows (55, 65, 75, 85, and 95). I haven't built a table yet to interpolate values between these. These are used for calculation on where to place the sight accurately on the screen.

Release notes are here. Please read them carefully for setup instructions and on how to use the new features:
http://www.classicjetsims.com/downloads/CF-104ReleaseNotes.pdf

Known issues:
- not enough axes assignments anymore to set radar controls if you're adjust radar settings using joystick axes
- thrust tables are messed up so supersonic performance is not accurate.
- Zooming inside the cockpit scews the sight position... will add support for this later.

I'll fix those issues for the official release.

You current license key should work for this build (I'm out of town until Sunday Jan 18th though). If not, send me your new serial number and I'll generate you a new key. If you need a new serial number, please send me your invoice number. If you don't have that, send me your original license file and if you don't have that let me know around when you bought it so I can look your order up. See chapter 3.1 in the manual on how to get your serial number:
http://www.classicje...oads/CF-104.pdf

Conventional Attack Version Info

The CF-104 has slightly evolved from what I first had in mind... slightly being a huge understatement. First I had just planned on adding a couple of bombs to drop as you get with the demo version (see link above) but now we've added all of the new sub-panels for the conventional attack version. Luca has made huge modifications to all of the textures and interior and exterior models so it's turning out to be almost a completely new project which brings me to the next point. The new CF-104 conventional attack aircraft is going to be sold separately as we've put a few hundred hours of development to it. The 64 bit plugin for the current nuclear strike version will still be free though for current users and that has some nice updates too with a better adjustable gun sight on the HUD. With the conventional attack version though, you'll be getting a couple of new goodies too for free:

X-HUD which will work on any X-Plane aircraft to give you a HUD which finally works in the X-Plane virtual cockpit focused to infinity.

X-Combat - I'm factoring out the combat functions into a separate plugin which will allow you to fire air-to-ground weapons of various types at ground targets and have them explode. It has SAMs that fire at you too and a radar warning receiver. It works with X-HUD so you'll have a HUD with weapon modes to fire the weapons and it works with World Traffic so you destroy World Traffic aircraft, vehicles and static structure.

Included flight plans for an air base or two that work with World Traffic so you can see aircraft of a similar era flying around. I just finished the conversion of a F-106 and a Tu-95 from FSX AI models and have a lot more planes to convert.

I found ou a problem that before never noticed. I select the fuel, turn on the APU car all is workin, Then i start the both engines and at 10% i add the fuel , engine starts normal and the APU wagon takes the cable off , a message appears NORMAL ENGINE START and just after this the engines go out. If i start teh Starfighter with engine running all is ok.

What could it be? Thanks MartinDE

Hi, I love this sim more than pretty much any other - it shares the crunchiness prize with NASSP 7 Beta Apollo 8 with virtual AGC.

But I am very frustrated with this characteristic of the CF-104: it seems that when taking off in a crosswind, with any kind of aileron and/or yaw input, aileron trim is completely deranged. It takes a ridiculous amount of trim to cancel it out, to the extent that although it is possible to land the aircraft, any flight beyond the satisfaction of having recovered safely with a dangerous fault is rendered quite unenjoyable and thus pointless.

I'm using a rather archaic setup - Windows XP 32-bit - because there isn't a Linux version of the CF-104 yet (my preferred OS), and Windows 7 64-bit doesn't support gameport controllers (I have an MS Sidewinder FF Pro that is perfectly sound and doesn't need throwing out just yet).

I'm not sure this has any bearing on the situation, though: It seems to be in the CF-104 plugin somewhere, because when I take off with no crosswind and controls absolutely dead center except for a little elevator, the aileron trim is sweet as a nut, such that positive then suddenly zero aileron input = instantly zero roll, every roll manoeuvre is crystal clear and absolutely stable (with such crude control surfaces - no spoilers or tailerons to transfer roll authority to with increasing speed - it's a credit to Kelly Johnson that the thing flies so well.... KISS, simplicate, and add lightness.)

I hope it's not just me, I've been trying to characterise the nature of this bug for ages and it only just struck me the other day, that control surface positions on takeoff might be affecting the trim. I tested it a few times and it seems indeed to be the case: the position of the ailerons at the moment of lift-off seems to be taken as the centre position.

(I'd also add that although it is possible to assign cf104/aileron_trim_* to keys, the keys don't repeat when held down, and adjusting aileron trim to any sensible degree is lengthy and impractical when you have to keep repeatedly hitting the key: after a crosswind takeoff, it would take about half an hour to get to the necessary +/-0.500 or so aileron trim. I'd like to avoid using up precious joystick buttons for this - pitch trim and view functions take precedence.)

Sometimes also the nosewheel engage becomes locked on and has to be pressed to disengage - not sure if this has any bearing on the aileron trim problem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jygXTQd7P2c&feature=youtu.be

The Tu-95 Bear aircraft is animated via World Traffic which now has an interface to let its aircraft be destroyed. If an impact is detected, the standard model is replaced with a specified "destroyed" model. Structures may be destroyed as well.

The CRV-7 are custom weapons. The CF-104 code models the trajectory and calculates the impact point displayed on the gun reticle. By creating my own weapon system I can support the entire weapon configuration and the X-Plane weapon interface is bypassed. This way I can also manage explosions better. The standard warhead for a CRV-7 rocket is 10 lbs but if it hits an aircraft, the explosion effect is increased, in this case to 500 lbs and it is configurable for each aircraft or structure.

Thanks to Luca for the MK-82 Snakeye model and other upcoming weapon type. This update features a custom weapon system using custom objects as weapons using my own ballistics code. This way I can animate the bomb fins and also track the weapon's position so that my custom weapon camera works to follow the bomb to the ground. It was a bit tricky trying to figure out to make them explode but I sorted that out.

Next up is modeling of the CRV-7 rockets and the addition of the Radar Warning Receiver. This photo shows one of the threats that you can detect with the RWR. It will fire at you.

Help finding flickery graphic glitches in xp10

I've started cleaning up the model for the CF-104, there will be a few details added but I'll keep these under wrap for the time being.

I'm searching for graphic glitches in the hope to fix them all it would really helpful if all of you could fly the CF-104 in xp10 with pixel shading on hdr on and spot any corrupted flickering polygons which appear through the fuselage.

If you find any please take a screenshot and reply to this post so I could get a visual list of the most affected areas. I've already found a few by the way, see attached pics.

Here's a bit of background info on the issue. There is a known problem in the xp community where some polygons might show flickering and through the fuselage in xplane10 when the following conditions are met:

normal maps are used

uvs are overlapping

pixel shading and hdr are on

only happening on nvidia cards (?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXy6udHPKck&feature=youtu.be

As you can see it mostly works. I just have to improve the clipping algorithm for other FOVs and view angles so that the gun sight reticle doesn't display outside of the HUD frame. It's a shame that X-Plane doesn't support HUD displays as there are so many aircraft that use them these days. Some aircraft do draw HUD symbols on the HUD glass but they are not focused to infinity and the view angles are wrong.

I still plan to add conventional attack capability to it, now that I found a pilot who used to fly the plane in this role. He lives just a couple blocks away from us and has provided me with a ton of manuals and he'll help me with testing too. The guys name is Bob Wade, which should be a familiar name to any Canadian who has attended air shows up here over the years. He flew Starfighters in Europe, flew with the Snowbirds, was a CF-18 pilot for years and was also the demo pilot for one season. He was also the first western pilot to fly the Mig-29. Here's an interesting article on how the Mig-29 flight came to happen:

It seems OpenAL is pickier as to the inputs you give it compared to the PC version. I updated the PC version anyway with the same fix but I haven't had any reported crash problems with the PC version. A: The Mac version isn't ready yet but should be done by the end of December. An announcement will be made when that is ready.

Q: The license file that was sent me doesn't work.
A: This is a weird one. On one system, the license file was found to have html code embedded in it. The file must be saved as a basic text file in something like notepad. Send me your serial number again and either enter it manually into the license file or enter it in your registration window. Make sure you close the window first before re-opening the plane! Closing the file saves the license file.

SETUP

Q: The fancy specular lighting does not show up on my system.
A: Go to the X-Plane Rendering Options window and make sure that the option for per-pixel lighting is turned on.

Q: It's too much work to use all of the virtual cockpit functions. Is there another way I control all of the aircraft systems?
A: Yes! Push F12 to open the key command interface. You can use key commands in this menu to control almost all CF-104 systems. If you have a programmable joystick you can also program that to run any of the key commands. F12 is the default function key but this can be changed in the Plugins-CF-104-Joystick Setup menu.

Q: The F12 function key for the key command menu doesn't work.
A: There are possible conflicts with other plugins that use hot keys. F12 is the default function key but this can be changed in the Plugins-CF-104-Joystick Setup menu.

UPDATES / REPAINTS / NEW MISSIONS / SCENERY

Q: Where do I find a paint kit, updates, mission scenery, etc?
A: The paint kit with all of the necessary pdf files, and all free updates are or will be available from my web site at:
Classic Jet Simulations Web Site

OPERATION

Q: The aileron trim doesn't work.
A: You must follow the setup procedures in the manual. The CF-104 Joystick and Axis setup menu has an option to assign the aileron trim to a function on your stick. I had to override the X-Plane trim system to provide extra functionality not supported by the sim, making this necessary. You don't have to change any X-Plane joystick preferences. They will continue to work for other aircraft.

Q: How do I open the canopy?
A: Push F12 to open the key command menu. Select the General Equipment option and then the toggle canopy open/close option. I'll fix the aircraft so that you can click on the canopy open lever to open the canopy.

Q: Why can't I can't raise the landing gear?
A: The CF-104 plugin models over-speed failures. If you don't get the gear up by 280 knots, it will fail down and not retract. Now you'll have to use the emergency gear lever to extend it again. Use the "Clear Failures" option from the Flight Preparation window to reset the gear to working condition.

Q: Why can't I can't steer the plane on the ground
A: You need to configure a nose-wheel steering button on your joystick like in the real aircraft. This can be configured from the CF-104 Joystick Configuration window.

FLYING ISSUES

Q: The plane becomes unstable at high speeds.
A: This appears to be frame-rate related. If the frame rate is above 50 fps the problem does not appear. To correct, open the X-Plane Aircraft-Operation and Warnings menu and change the flight model cycles from 1 to 2. This is a common problem with X-Plane aircraft and a value of 2 is recommended by Laminar Research who make X-Plane.

Q: When I start flying aggressively, the plane goes out of control and into a flat spin.
A: This ain't no F-16! You've probably encountered pitch-up. Watch your APC gauge. If it gets past a reading of 5 this indicates that your pitch rate is too high or you Angle-of-Attack is too high. Beyond this point, the plane will pitch-up and spin.

Q: My plane goes into a rapid roll when I'm landing.
A: See next question!

Q: What is BLC and Symmetric BLC?
A: BLC stands for Boundary Layer Control. The manual has more details on this but with flaps in landing configuration, air is ducted from the engine over the flaps to provide more lift at low speed. This would occur at engine RPMs of around 82%. Below that engine speed, the BLC would cut out and you'd lose a lot of lift. For this reason, engine rpms must be kept above 83% during landing. You will see an option in the Plugins-CF-104 Systems-Preferences window that let you select Symmetric BLC. In most aircraft BLC was un-symmetric such that it would come alive over one wing before the other. If you have it set to be un-symmetric, you will lose lift on one wing before the other as you reduce engine rpms below 83%. This will cause a roll tendency and if you are close to stall speed, one wing will stall and you'll find yourself in a very rapid roll.

Q: What is that rattling sound I hear any time I do turns or when I'm flying slow?
A: That would be the stick shaker rattling away. It goes on at high angles-of-attack to let the pilot know the plane is close to stall speed.

XP 10.10r3 no audio prob

Hi Greg,
I am wondering if there is a way to get the in-cockpit audio working in xp 10.10.
I know some things are currrently in flux and I may just have to wait for another release.
But just checking in case i'm missing something simple.
I have tried the following steps:

1. Installed OpenAL driver
2. installed CF-104 2.3.1
3. installed the 2.3.6 upgrade per instructions (still says 2.3.1 when i load the CF-104).
4. started x-plane 10.
5. disable gizmo add-on.
6. load the CF-104 aircraft.
7. Start the engine - some audio during startup, but no audio after startup complete.

Any help appreciated as this is onen of my favorite aircraft for xp.

Large FPS Drop when entering VC

Hi,

i bought the wonderful CF-104 by CJS, but there is something that stops me from flying it. The outside view provides more fps then any other plane. But when I enter the VC, the fps immediately fall from about 50 to 24 and after switching on the batteries and avionics only 21-23 fps.

The CF-104 is a very complex aircraft, but whats causing this hughes drop? The graphics or the plugins working in the background? Even the Carenados have good fps, this is the only one with such a large difference between inside and outside view.

Waiting for 10.10 final before next engine performance update

It seems Austin has modified the flight model again in version 10.10 betas, especially at supersonic speeds so be aware that the plane may not fly correctly with these latest beta versions. Once 10.10 final is out, I'll fix the engine performance in the plugin again so you get correct supersonic accelerations and top speeds.

Also, I wanted to point out that it does indeed take a F-104 3 minutes to accelerate from M0.9 to M2.0 at an aircraft weight of 18,000 lbs in clean configuration at 35,000 feet, based on the performance charts in the manual. I've tried to keep my thrust tables updated so you get this performance in the sim. I've had a couple of e-mails lately from people thinking the acceleration is too slow. This may be partly due to the supersonic acceleration for most fighters in X-plane being far too rapid. I think it's improved lately, but I know at one time planes were accelerating from M1.0 to M2.0 in something like 15 seconds.

A CF-104 has flown up to M2.35 so the plane is still accelerating at M2.0. M2.0 is listed as the top speed in many books and articles. This is the recommended top speed, but the plane can go faster, so that is why I haven't limited the top speed to M2.0 in the sim. The performance charts show the plane still accelerating nicely at M2.0. The inlet is designed to really start working well at M1.5. I do have the engine fail eventually once the compressor inlet temperature gets beyond 157 degrees for a sustained amount of time, but I don't know if that's accurate, but surely some part must overheat and fail beyond this temperature. Anyway, slow down when the SLOW light goes or when the compressor inlet temperature reaches 120 degrees and you won't kill the engine. This happens close to M2.0. You can fly up to a CIT of 157 degrees though and not kill the engine in the sim. Of course if the plane was over-sped in real life, it was off to maintenance for some serious checks.

X-Combat Preview

Here's a new video I posted of a combat demo we did for the air force.
