Dear all,

Users who like to fly with orthophoto based sceneries may be interested in the free software Ortho4XP.

It has been developed in the last few months and has evolved according to the feed-back from participants

of the french forum x-plane.fr. Being mostly Python based, it is also cross-platform, at least Linux, OS X

and Windows.

The software only concentrates on building a base mesh and its textures. The complexity of both is user

configurable directly within the graphical interface, and the process does not rely on Meshtool or DSFTool

but uses its own meshing and encoding algorithms.

To get nice flying conditions, you could marry it with tiles generated from tools which only concentrate on

overlays to the base mesh, like e.g. World2XPlane and its very promising recent evolution.

Those who wish to see it in action before trying it out may :

- search for the keyword Ortho4XP in Youtube (you won't see many objects on purpose, the goal was to show the mesh only)

- download the Narvik tile (+68+017) on zonephoto.x-plane.fr (marry it with the nice ENNK scenery by Skylark2992!)

- have a look inside the included Manual.pdf

Since it is open source software, experienced users may adapt it to their particular needs, and I will be happy to help if

needed. Yet, most of users will probalby stick with the default graphical interface, from which advanced configuration

is already possible.

(Hope you'll) have fun !

Oscar

good works on everything easy and beautyful

A must-have unless you fly above the clouds 100% of the time. In other words, a must-have. Did my first VFR flight without, finding my way through the midlands was an absolute nightmare wherein everything looked the same. With it installed, absolute game-changer. Thank you for all the work that went (and still goes!) into this gem! 🤩

Good tool for good scenery. Thank you.

I tried to like this.  The ONE time I got results, they were good.  Too bad it was only once.  I never could get the program to open the first time I tried it and gave up.  Six months later, I gave it another shot and it worked perfectly.  I came back the next day after changing NOTHING and all I got were various errors.  After uninstalling and reinstalling numerous times, then reading through dozens of threads on various issues without finding a solution, I came to the conclusion that I just needed to walk away.  Oscar did a good job and if you can get things working it's great but, with a temper and not a lot of patience, this one is just more trouble than it's worth.

Hi. I installed Ortho4XP like in the tutorial. The scenery is downloading, but Ortho is not creating scenery folder inside Custom scenery. This is my settings, and folders:

By following the excellent tutorial, Simple Tutorial - Ortho4XP, installing upgraded scenery was easy. Excellent program and should be highly recommended. Tried it out around Alice Springs (YBAS) and it improved the whole area. Noticed some funny patches though, (file attached) but this maybe from the images that are used. Excellent work.

This may well be a fantastic tool, but getting hold of it is almost impossible. As someone else said -

" I miss when Ortho4xp was a zip file you could download from google drive. "

I went round and round in circles trying to find a download link, and github is impossible to use for this since it gives no instructions for downloading at all. Moreover, all that it offers is v1.28 from 2018. And looking at the forum thread for questions takes you to the oldest / first page.

I did manage to get a Google link for a Windows version (v1.30) from the very end of that thread, which gives me a download of 130 Mb. Inside that is a statement that for a Windows user all that is needed is a single file of around 5 Mb.

So, in theory, I have a copy of the tool, but it cost me a great deal of time and frustration getting there. When I have more time, I may explore this, but right now my energy level is very low . . .

This is a total game changer! A must have for X-Plane. Thank you so much for making this great tool. The only thing I would like to see is an easier way to install this on Mac.

Its to much work for what it's worth. For people that aren't very knowledgeable on computers the installation from git hub is very complex. I miss when Ortho4xp was a zip file you could download from google drive.

"There is so much in this world that I do not understand. See that ORTHOXP4? It has something to do with upgrading X-Plane 11 scenery. I have absolutely no idea how it works, but I do understand the reason for it to work. I have absolutely no idea how Oscar is able to do some of the things he does, but I believe there's a reason for that as well."

I'd been reading through these forums on the subject of Ortho4xp for a while, but thought it was way too technical for me to get involved with.  I watched a great beginners tutorial on YouTube and thought "I can do that", so I did.

ORTHOXP4 is a fantastic tool; it has this wonderful quality of being as simple or as complex to use as you need it to be.  You can start off with some simple, easy to follow steps to upload better scenery than the default X-Plane stuff, and it just works.  Once your confidence grows you can then progress to more intermediate stuff with numbers and selections to manipulate how it works from default settings, which are pretty good to start with.

Two surrounding airport scenery's in, Indy Exec and Telluride, and I'm hooked.  The improvement of the latter is jaw dropping with the surrounding mountains showing all their glory.  The airfield itself accentuates the profile of the real world runway a little too much but maybe that's a setting adjustment for the future.

Top Job Oscar, thanks.

While fantastic scenery from Satellite images, the issue with 1.20b is that it does not create overlays for the roads, and keeps erroring out stating it Can't sniff the global scenery directory.  I've tried this many times over, verifying the path to be x-plane 11\global scenery, and still get the error.  I've heard that you're not supposed to download the one on Github, so I've strayed from that, but access to a working version that includes roads with traffic (not just pictures, but like in the base renders of X-Plane 11 with moving cars and such).

So far, everywhere I have looked, people are complaining about the same thing... so it can't all be user error here.

It is without doubt a great help to us mortals. I take my time learning but because of the different versions or performers out there it can be confusing. Even the accents can throw you off so pick the one you are comfortable with & enjoy the results.

This is the mightiest tool I found to make X-Plane look more realistic.

I would give 6 stars, just 5 because the documentation could be more clearly.

It will fill your hard disks faster than everything I know.

I've tried for a long time installing this on my mac, but I couldn't get it right. Now I ran the exe of the windows version and it worked perfectly. I'm getting even better frames than with the normal mesh and could higher my rendering settings.

Thank you for such a beautiful tool.

Finally I found the time to try your tool for the first time: I'm very impressed, easy to install and use, and extremely powerful. Well done Didier!
