It is the whole world, in ver7 resolution scenery, including those areas above and below the 60° Latitudes (which is most of Antarctica), just in case you want to wander around a bit. tongue.gif I actually saved a screenshot of the main map, and as I downloaded sections, painted them in, so I knew I had them. Also, this gem of info was imparted to me from GaryBkk- Mac users will need to get a utility that will expand the rar archive files from the SRTM site, it is available at:
UnRarX Site

If you land, keep the engine running, so it doesn't freeze up. If you happen to touch any frozen metal with an ungloved hand, never use both hands. You will need a free hand to unzip, and aim a urine stream at the frozen/stuck hand to thaw the ice, and get free. Not a joke, that is standard training for researchers, support personel and members of the military that travel/work in Antarctica. It should go without saying, don't try to lick any frozen metal objects while down there.

And... Please, Please... Someone make a dome for South Pole Station!!!!
Eddygazilion
Time to figure out how to install Winter World (or is it already snowy down there?)

(If you haven't seen A Christmas Story, you should smile.gif)

Flick: Are you kidding? Stick my tongue to that stupid pole? That's dumb!
Schwartz: That's 'cause you know it'll stick!
Flick: You're full of it!
Schwartz: Oh yeah?
Flick: Yeah!
Schwartz: Well I double-DOG-dare ya!
Flick: ...
Schwartz: I TRIPLE-dog-dare ya!
KHPN Spotter
Unfortunatly winter world won't work unless I have global scenery, and since my entire HD is only 80GB, that's not happening tongue.gif

LOL its not cold at all at Palmer... thats why they chose that location...

Some info:

Info on Palmer Staion.

Palmer Station centers around zoology reasearch with two Penguin colonies nearby.

The station consists of two large and three small buildings built on rock, and two fuel tanks.

Access is by Sea.

The temperature is mild, with monthly averages ranging from minus 10°C in July and August to 2°C in January and February. The annual mean is minus 3°C.

There is no routine air access to Palmer. Over the years small ski equipped aircraft have occasionally landed on the glacier to the east of the station.

Strip is 2500ft Snow (In X-plane gravel on grass env v7)
Facilities: None

Nearest Mainland Airfield: Guardiamarina Zanar SCGZ 660nm 4hrs By twin Otter.

Winter World won't help you when you're flying above older V7 scenery. For that you'll need these snow textures by Christian Bothe. (Note: installing them will take some patience as there are a few texture files that will need to be duplicated and renamed - the textures were originally made for X-Plane 6 and V7 has some new texture files)
URF
A quick hack to make the surrounding area look more arctic.
Unzip and put NZ12 in the Custom Scenery folder. (If you don't need more than the close scenery, you can make do with only this, otherwise you'll want some .env scenery for Antarctica.)
david_run
does someone have a link to a ski plane ?
Thanks
D.

Not many of those, maybe because the skis don't actually do anything more than look like skis.
Shade Tree Micro Aviation (payware, link on main page) has some with skis, for example Husky and Turbine Otter.

Has anyone else seen the 141,000 ft square shapped colum of water surrounding Palmer station? I went there a while ago and that's what I found. Interesting. Maybe I'll do a space shuttle reentery to the flyin. That might be the only way for me to get there, LOL.

Visited the place with URF's scenery and no water column.

BTW, fired up Blender to see if I can make a couple of custom buildings, that bring some resemblance to the real thing.
Just a mini-mini-scenery. Watch this thread.

Welcome Back Sergio. Hope your wedding went OK.
scabral
It was fine, now belonging to the rank of "married" wink.gif , negotiating my X-Plane time with the wife biggrin.gif

Anyway, 1 hour work and here's a shot of the buildings, straight from Blender.
Reference image is this:

Wow Sergio... long-time. Good to see you still around. (just got married myself - all the best)

Sorry for the thread-jack... now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Just finished texturing.
2hrs for all the UV faces, but it's a hack, some really bad textures here and there... But it will do for now. Just need to place it in the scenery and tweak some details.

Very nice work you're doing here, Scabral!!

Unfortunately, I'll probably not be able to show up much tomorrow, as I've quite some stuff to do for school.. Let's see, perhaps I'll manage to fly a bit between 1900 and 2100Z..

Ok, it's tested and uploaded to the Download Manager.
Unzip into the custom scenery folder. Thanks to URF for letting me use his modified terrain files.

Enjoy smile.gif

Thanks Scabral! I'm downloading your Palmer Station Scenery now! On dial-up, so someone else may actually get it and try it before I can. tongue.gif I appreciate your effort for this fly-in! Nice splashscreen by-the-way, very sciency-retro. happy.gif

Update: The files work great, thanks again Scabral and URF!! Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentWith the runway and a solid Heli-Pad, and lots of ocean for float planes, there should be plenty of different vehicles there tomorrow. happy.gif Looking forward to it.
Luke173
tom, don't you think your pod is a little too big for that helipad??

biggrin.gif

many thanks to scabral!! looks great

scabral
I wasn't thinking of futuristic hover pods when I built it... must update Antarctica building codes wink.gif

BTW get the update for the helipad, now lighted.
scabral
Well, after a 3hr flight, upon sight of the first planes around Palmer, XP crashed sad.gif
Restart and it would crash again. It was obviously the display of other online aircraft. Anyway, I didn't have time to look around and debug so I just landed .. offline .. tongue.gif kinda stupid.
But the flight was fun, with all the navigation and fuel planning.

Anyone been to the Galapagos? Just flew there, and it's amazing scenery ( Baltra - SEGS ) with the huge calderas and craters.
KHPN Spotter
If memory serves me, we did the Galapagos, but there's nothing saying we won't go again smile.gif

As for this week though, we're going to have a themed Fly-in, Kumi has become good at coming up with these types of locations lately biggrin.gif. The location will require the Danish oilrigs scenery package. We will be flying to the carrier from that scenery package which wikipedia identifies as the Nimitz-class USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). Helicopters can use the oil rigs if they like and there's a large airport for airliners in Esbjerg, Denmark for anyone coming in from a long flight. The code for the carrier is CA01. This is our first ever Fly-in on a carrier and it promises to be a s**t show, excuse my language tongue.gif.

See you on the deck!

Oooo-Keeyyy... Then this will be my first attempt ever to land an aircraft on a carrier.. Well.. there's always a first time tongue.gif

See you there..

Mine can be summed up as: "It's easier to not use the wires and use a REALLY slow aircraft."

Deck-fest! Or as Chuck Yeager would say, "Nice auger-jobs!" wink.gif
Anyway, must show up and scrape some paint off that deck myself.
six7
Great idea, but... uhmmm... the carrier CA01 is a scenery object... although it has a solid surface, the arresting cables are non-functional the last time I checked. (unless of course it's been updated, in which case just ignore me)

edit: oops! just noticed Brett's post above - guess a lot of folks will be flying helos wink.gif

Not too slow...then you'll never reach the carrier (if it is moving)

Touch and goes, or helicopters...

I just checked out the scenery, and found a few things:

1. There are parts of the carrier that are "soft" and your plane will fall through. I've tried my best to show where they are in this screenshot below:
If you stay away from the edges and the big red square to the right of my plane, you should be fine.

2. Gunnar's Twin Otter seems to be a perfect plane to use. It can go pretty fast during cruise, and it also is a STOL for takeoff and landings.

Hehe oh yeah... tongue.gif

Weather service is reporting heavy snow, Gale force 10+ V.Low Vis and 45knts + winds... Cant wait to get into the Heli with my mouse...

EKEB is lesser used International Airport, Primarily used to serve the off shore industry AFAIK... Its the operation base for Maersk who fly Sea Kings and Supa Pumas out to the rigs

Other traffic includes:
Ryan Air to London Stanstead
BMI to Aberdeen
DAT (Danish Air Transport) to Stavanger.

Oil rig traffic departs via FIX PEGAM from where they are directed to their destinations.

Route to the carrier:

Helicopters depart From EKEB H1 via east or west guides and along runway.
NDB HP 4.7nm Climbing to 2000ft
FIX PEGAM 19.7nm HDG 260
HDG 243 to carrier

Charts available HERE
