Yes. If you can see the extracted files, you should see a folder with the aircraft name. Just drag that entire folder into the x-plane airplane folder.

In the Airplane folder, you'll see folders with names of types of aircraft - such as general aviation or heavy metal. Pick which one of those you want to airplane to be located in and drag it into that sub-directory. FOr example, if you download a Cessna 182, you would probably want to find it under r"General Aviation". So open explorer to x-plane, aircraft, general aviation, then drag the downloaded aircraft in.

You can aslo drag right out of the zip file too. When you double-click the zip file, if you're using Winzip or 7zip, you'll see the contents of the zip file before you tell it to extract. In this case, I just drag the aircraft folder right out of the zip window and into the x-plane, aircraft, folder of my choice.

The plane is there, just in the wrong folder.

If you download say Cessna 182, it shoudl look like this:

x-plane 9
- Aircraft
- General Aircraft
- Cessna 182

You then open Cessna 182 folder when selecting your plane in x-plane, and click on the aircraft file and it willopen for you.

While I'm sorry to see YXD close, I fully understand and support the decision. I used to live in Edmonton in the 1980s and loved watching the 737-200 landing and taking off. The approach over Kingsway Mall was amazing - you can recreate this in x-Plane using the Canadian Rockies scenery). But those jets were noisy and deafening for those living under the approach paths. It also wasn't very safe as evidenced when a twin prop crashed into the 9th floor of the Royal Alexander Hospital while on final approach to Runway 30.

The airport also restricted development in downtown - there is a gap in the high rises west of downtown for the Runway 34 approach and another east for the Runway 30 approach. Highrises in downtown Edmonton are limited in height due to the proximity of the airport.

The aiprort has also hurt YEG. So much so that restrictions were placed on YXD, including a requirement that flight stop at another Alberta airport t prevent direct competing flights from YXD. There were no restrictions on flights to the north (Yukon and NWT)

During the day, YXD saw over a million passengers a year, most of them on flights to YYC, at times a 737 was departing every 20 minutes. Many of these aircraft continued on to other destinations in Canada, thus avoiding the rule that flight to or from YXD were limited to a destination within Alberta. The result was that YYC gained a lot of traffic. Flights from the north would touch down at YXD and continue to Calgary, so for connecting passengers faced with a change of airports in Edmonton or going to Calgary, the choice was obvious. So YEG lost traffic and YYC gained.

For the airport lands, I'd like to see a well designed high density master plan that incorporates the history of the aiport (maybe retain aviation names, a museum, a park, part of a runway, etc) in the design.

The closure of 16/34 was purely to allow NAIT to expand and kept the runway closest to the terminals. But really, closing 12/30 first would have made more sense from a safety issue as 16/34 has the an ILS approach (ILS on 34, back course on 16).

I'm not convinced the airport is needed. So long as hospitals have heliports, Edmonton can live without the City Centre Airport. I will miss it (already do as it no longer has the excitement as it did when 737s and DC-9s used to land there). But it will live on x-plane, just as Kai Tak does in Hong Kong.

Thanks for the further clarification of the issues Lightplane. Geez, I was there, at Kingsway (buying software for my TRS80 Colour Computer )when the Royal Alex got hit. Safety, as well as other issues raised by you certainly make a case for complete closure. There are some very good reasons for retention of GA however, not to mention large $$$ in commercial business co-located. Many of the same issues are raised when discussing Toronto Island and even, in many ways Buttonville; a very large GA 'drome in NE Metro Toronto that the airport authority doesn't want to pay for anymore (yes, yes... another bees nest of issues).

Anyhow, thanks for the detailed post. It was enjoyable and yes, flying the approach on 34 does bring me back

I'll still in awe at Tom's wonderful Inside Passage scenery package. Yesterday evening, I decided to enjoy the beautiful weather by violating Olympic Airspace.

I took off from YVR on the cross-wind runway and flew around Point Grey. I dropped down to 100 ft, flying by a large cruise ship at deck level, and then flying under the Lions Gate Bridge. I then blasted down Georgia Street between the high-rises (nice job with the Shangra-la btw), then over False Creek for a low pass over the Cambie and Granville Bridges and then down and under the beautiful Burrard Bridge. Over English Bay I climbed and then headed south for a landing on 8L at YVR. Shut down and jumped out before the Integrated Olympic Security team could find me.

And by the way, flying at less than 100ft above the water at 110 knots in a land plane is a nail-biting experience - even in a simulator.

That's the standard way, yes, but unless you have unlimited bandwidth it could turn out to be a pain. Updates come fast and furious from on top, and sometimes they'll break your favorite plane or installation. When that happens there's usually no way to go back unless you've upgraded to a beta instead of a final version number. For that reason and in order to run beta builds, many users keep multiple installations of X-Plane.

One good way of doing that is to extract all non-default files to a temporary folder outside then duplicate the X-Plane folder. Typically these are the heavy folders: Global Scenery, Custom Scenery and Aircraft. If you can do that the update is typically in the order of 15~21 MBs provided you left the default Aircraft and Custom Scenery folders with the default files inside. If not, the update will make you download those files again even if they are unchanged. That's why I don't recommend mixing downloaded aircraft with the default ones. Make another aircraft folder called whatever (Aircraft_downloads, for example) and arrange your planes any way you like inside them. Presto, you can drag that into or out of any X-Plane folder.

For the default Custom Scenery I just rename it ("Custom Scenery default," for example) and copy the folders inside into a new "Custom Scenery" folder where downloaded sceneries go. Moving from version to version, you just drag the three folders into the X-Plane folder you intend to use. When upgrading one of your versions, park the heavy folders elsewhere and remove "default" from the "Custom Scenery default" folder. The upgrade won't change the default files unless they need updating too.

Others may have a better way of doing that; this works for me. I currently have 9.31, 9.41 and 9.45 versions. I also have 9.01 in another drive with old planes I can't be bothered to move wholesale but check individually from time to time. (This would be unnecessary if X-Plane kept the default files in "default" folders.)

I like X plane's flight model a lot more than MSFS, too. It feels a lot more fluid (simulated vs. programmed).
