I have been looking but have not found a good procedure for making a flight plan. Is it just done through ATC?

Just go into X-IVAP and select "File Flight Plan." Then fill in the blank fields and click send
Check the Fly-in thread in the Flight Operations forum for details on this weeks Fly-in location!

I make my own flight plans by typing them in on the FMC on the aircraft flight deck and when finished by clicking on save on the FMC.
It can take time if you are flying some distance having to move airports to see the waypoints and VORs but I think it is well worth the effort.

@ OP
If you are asking how to generate realistic (sort of) flight plans then try:
http://www.simroutes.com/
Cheers

EDIT: Try going to generate routes for flight plans not in its database. Also has the advantage of exporting V8/V9 .fms files for easy loading into your err..fms
I don't know how accurate these flight plans are to real world traffic, but as I don't know it doesn't make any difference to me!

put your downloaded flightplan into x-plane folder/output/FMS plans
make sure you tab down and select a X-plane8-9 flightplan before you download !!!
then when the simulator is running, select the LD button on your FMS computer. this stands for LOAD.

Hello guys... Brand new guy here in X-Plane...
My question is... How do I create a Flight Plan in X-Plane, then feed it to my GPS or FMS or just follow it?
Excuse the comparison, but, for example, in FS, I can push the Direct-To in my GPS, feed my waypoint and follow the line... Also, in FS FMS, I can type the flight plan and follow it... or... I can pull up the kneeboard and see my flightplan along the map... Are there similar features in X-Plane?
Thanks!

I am looking for a website in which you can create flightplans that are used on real aircraft. I tried simroutes.com but as I generate a new flight is only gives to two airports, no points between them

In the spirit of the *realest* experience I can come up with well...
1. I bought a Flight Plan pad (Planner Sheets) from VIP Pilot Centre (buy on the www) for $4.95 Canadian.
2. I work the net and get flight/topo and terminal maps for plan, including enroute and destination (don't forget obstruction maps)
3. I hand build the flight plan with waypoints/airports, codes and modes.
4. Then I use the simple flight plan filer in XP9 to get the ball rolling with ATC.
5. I fill it out , file it, preflight and follow my hand sheets with enroute details, then close it out like the real Mccoy.
6. Finished for the day(flight) I file the sheet in my Flights Taken folder in cabinet, fill out my Logbook ($9.95 from VIP) and pour a healthy single malt to celebrate yet another wonderful X-Plane adventure.
I am using this technique as I fly the "Cessna Virtual World Tour" and blog it (http:://cougarwing.blogspot.com/). The added work *is* the added reality and just makes the sim that much more engaging!
Enjoy.

I should tell you that you can download flight log/ planner sheets free and print them off if you have a printer.
save you a few dollars after you run out of purchased ones.
