Slow performance using ATI 8.1 driver
#1
Posted 25 January 2008 - 10:13 AM
Hi,
using newest ATI-drivers 8.1 gives me very bad performance in X-Plane.
FPS are reduced by around 30-40% and, e.g., water reflections are less nice in 8.1 than when using an older driverr 7.x. (blue dots, reflections are pixelated)
Tried different settings for the ATI-driver (activated application specific AF/AA etc...)
Switching back to 7.x corrects these problems.
Anyone having the same problem or any solution?
Thank you,
Jonas

Sounds like you already know what the problem is - a crappy driver.
So just keep using the older version until ATI releases an updated version & try again, repeat as neccessary

Yes, I too have very poor performance from the ATI 8.1 catalyst driver using b19, the same is true of the 7.12 - but the 7.11 and b19 do show a big improvement over b18. I have mailed Ben and he asked if the problem was still there when using the line --no_fbos but haven't had time for this as yet & 7.11 running so well!!!
Might be an idea to report this so that he can see it's widespread.

7.11 eh? I'll try that one out. I too noticed the performance loss, and the reflections look all pixelated and black&white.

If one of you could post a screenshot that would be great, might have an answer for you.
Need to see the problem first though.

You can see some pixelation in the upper right of the water.

There is some sort of problem with current ATI drivers and X-Plane V9. The lower end ATI cards seem to perform best which is strange, the biggest problems seem to be with the ATI HD cards, your problem looks like somewhere in between. The following has worked for me, as the ATI updates haven't helped at all.
Run V9 with the command line option:
--no_fbos
Since starting V9 like this I have had no further graphics related issues (especially with reflective water) with V9 at all. I know you have mentioned that the problem may have solved itself, may be just intermittent though. If it persists though, give the above a try and see if it works.

well, I did do a defrag of my x plane drive which had a little over 33% of fragmentation. So that could have been it. Defragging also solved my problem of the sim crashing when trying to load new textures with the message ERROR:Reloading existing scenery took more than 10 seconds! when using extreme res graphics.

I find that any newer driver just plain sucks. I still am using the older driver from like a year ago. I think 7.1 or something of the sort. ATI has been slacking in the driver department. Until I know for sure that a newer one works great.. I don't plan on changing. As the saying goes "if it anit broke, don't fix it"
Don't look at me, I swear I put the landing gears down. Well ok maybe I didn't.
