I had a quick look at Xplane.
This looks like it would have to be a plugin.
Are you a programmer?

I did an example plugin for you. This is a proof of concept and please tell me if this is what you wanted.
Two plugins are included but you only need the RealEngineMac.xpl.. I put a private plugin in the zip for educational purposes where you can watch some temperature datarefs while testing the plugin.
From the readme.txt:
RealEngine v0.2 TEST
---------------------------------
This is a proof of concept plugin that will fail your engines if you go too
high on different temperatures. Like cylinder and oiltemperature.
Features:
Right before and slightly after reaching max temperature the engine may if you
are lucky warn you that something bad is going to happen by acting weird.
This is done by letting the plugin temporarily tamper with the fuelflow.
If you are lucky and get this warning you can now cool your engine in different
ways. Like lower the throttle.
If you keep on pushing the engine it will eventually break in several different
ways. You might even experience enginefires.
The plugin supports up to eight engines and is totally randomized for realism.
New in 0.2 TEST:
* Optimized the random logic.
RefScan
---------------------------------
This is really a personal plugin to quickly monitor datarefs with ease.
No need to restart x-plane if you wan't to check a dataref. Just edit the file
and disable/enable the plugin in the pluginmanager and the new refs will show.
I put this in for the purpose of watching the temperatures.
Features:
* No need to restart X-Plane each time.
* It knows by itself what kind of ref you are looking at. (read the inifile)
Mac universal: removed
Mac universal 0.2 TEST: removed
Mac universal & Windows 0.2 TEST:
RealEngine0.2TESTWinMac.zip (119.48K)
Number of downloads: 428
Refscan and the inifile is NOT needed to run realengine.

Thanks for looking at this Peter.
I just don't have time for any extra plugins at the moment.
Its also too close to the New Year.

So.. There you go. This plugin should be what you are looking for. Let me know if it is and I will evolve it to something even better.

This sure sounds like a good idea and would add a lot of realism...
It looks like it is mac only right? any chance for a windows version?
