Aircraft Navigation Lights How many Austins to change a lightbulb?
#1

I speak for myself when I say that one of the more cartoony features of X-Plane is definately the navigation lights on the aircraft. MSFS uses a great way to render these lights, and it is actually nice to look at the planes with these one, whereas with X-Plane I jump to the switches just to switch them off.
Is there anyone else that feels this way? I will try and add an image or two to substantiate my claim. I will probably mail Austin regarding this using the right channels and formatting.

Yep, same here. IRL nav lights are hard enough to see during the night time, let alone during the day. Probably one of the most unrealistic parts of X-Plane IMHO.
Here's to better (less intense) lights of all types.

It would be less of a problem if Austin could scale them infinitely. Now they shrink to a certain extent and then remain the same size no matter how far away the aircraft is.

Great ! So I'm not the only person who thinks that X-Plane light look more like something a cheerleader dances with ! They are seriously cartoony, and ruin many good X-Planes !

Got agree with this. X-plane lights seem bigger the further away they are.
AI planes look ridiculous at distance and runway lights look strange when they seem to enlarge with distance.
In addition to that I'd prefer seeing landing/taxi lights have some effect at dusk/dawn too. Now they magically start to work only when it gets really dark.

Besides the obvious problem with the nav & landing lights, I also think the strobe effect in the clouds is a huge exaggeration. It's not that bad in actual flight.. even at night in fog. It's nice that it's modeled in a visible manner but it's not accurate. It's effect is more like someone shotting off a flash from a camera inside the cockpit. Talk about ruining your night vision..

Yup the lights should shrink to a point with distance. We need more nav lights, better nav and strobe lights, and better colors. Customizable strobe and beacon timing would be nice too, along with beacons that flash. Oh yeah and the nav light colors should all be customizable because green is sooooo....green right now.

Are these problems with or without 'textured lights'?
When the temp is near the dew point, I've seen lights from a distance that appeared larger than they were normally but they were not any brighter than usual. A simple example is to take a piece of notebook paper and a flashlight. Shine the flashlight towards your face, place the paper between your face and the flashlight. Now, move the flashlight to and from your face. The nimbus, halo, glow (whatever you wish to call it) will get larger and dimmer as the flashlight moves away from you, also it will get brighter and smaller as it comes towards you. I know - duh!
Still this 'halo' only happens when there is something -ice crystals, dust, moisture in the air, snow flurries - to scatter or interfere with the light.
I agree the lights need some improvement. In addition to custom colors, it would be nice for XP to randomly use different shades of color for lights. Say 5 different reds, greens, yellows, &tc. Not all nav lights are the identical shade even on the same type of planes, runway, taxiway &tc. Age, dirt and bulb all contribute to this.

how many Austins does it take to change a light globe?
"X-plane does not support the changing of light bulbs, and it never will"
...2 betas later
(X-Plane-News) "wow, I just put in a cool new feature, now you can change the light bilbs. Just open Planemaker and use the cool blub editing screen. This means that you will have to update your aircraft files, but it will be worth it. Now GO TO IT!"
