Fly-In! the official fly-in thread
#1
Posted 27 November 2004 - 07:27 AM
just wanted to start another fly-in thread. i'll take the liberty to let the new people know what is going on. OK, every weekend (usually sunday) KHPN and Kumiankka have been nice enough to select a place (other then boring old SOCAL) and get it populated for online flight. This allows everyone to get used to flying in more exotic and exciting places. we have a lot of fun. some of the places we have flown to/at in the past are austrailia, iceland, and kenya.
tune in here every week to find out what the mystery location will be!

See this thread for information on tomorrow's fly-in. The main location will be in Guadeloupe, but if you want you can fly there from TNCM (who knows, I might join you there), even if the taxiways there are a bit weird
Get the latest airport data too, it has better taxiways for TFFR.

Here is the map for the St Maarten area ..... there's no terrain info however which sucks majorly as there's supposed to be a nice mountain on one of the islands!
If anyone knows where you can get terrain data from I (and I'm sure many other people) would be most grateful if you could tell us where!

Yes, that's the one, that file also has the scenery for Guadeloupe. I'll be heading from TFFG (Grand Case, very close to TNCM but has better taxiways) to TFFR (Le Raizet, Guadeloupe) at about 1800Z in the Breguet 763.

The location for the December 5th fly-in:
Kittilä, Finland (EFKT) and all of Lapland!
In the south there's Rovaniemi (EFRO) where tourists fly to see Santa Claus
In addition to Finnish Lapland (Lappi) you can also fly over to the Swedish side (Lappland) or Norwegian Lapland (Finnmark). Or you can venture over to the border between Finland and Russia and try to find Korvatunturi mountain, where Santa lives...
I've made custom taxiways for the following airports in the region:
EFKT, EFRO, EFIV, EFET, EFOU, EFKE (the last two are further south, closer to where I live)
Go here for the new taxiways and latest airport data
If you plan on flying in or from Sweden, you'll definitely want to get Sweden 1.5 scenery from the X-Plane Freeware project's forums.
And Lapland just wouldn't be the same without all that snow, so you can also install the winter textures from Albert Laubi's VFR in Winterland scenery.
Of course, there's a phenomenon called kaamos, not sure if there's an English word for it. Basically it means a period of time during winter when the sun doesn't come up at all.
That screenshot in the banner is during midday on Dec. 6th, and it gets darker the further north you go. Also, it's Independence Day here in Finland on December 6th, since that means no lectures on Monday morning I can fly all night if I want to
To get charts for the Finnish airports (they're in English too, don't worry) go to VACC Finland. The charts are in the Downloads/Charts section.
As for planes suited to Lapland, you'll want to make sure to choose something that has anti-ice, it can get very cold in the Arctic Circle... see you there on Sunday!

Cool stuff! .... oh ... sorry about the pun ....
Just one thing - where on your website are the taxiiways and airport data? I foudn myself on your site before after you pointed some other data out, but I couldn't find that either!
This next fly-in is one day before my birthday on Dec 6th!
I'll be 18!

Now to give everyone lots of warning, I'll be flying the Fokker 27 which is available from the bottom of this page:

lol, don't worry, I made the same bad pun back when we had the Iceland fly-in
About the taxiway data, it's not my site but Robin Peel's, a central repository for all the airport updates. For a direct link to the latest data try this.
