The HU-16 (SA-16) albatross saw widespread military service and was put to a wide variety of uses. 16 HU-16B were re-engined with a 1,525 HP Wright R-1820-82 engine instead of the usual 1,425 HP engine.

During 1960/61 ten were delivered to Canada and were used as rescue aircraft.
