To be exact, Allied wartime propaganda reported that the Germans called the P-38 "der gabelschwanz Teufel" (the fork-tailed devil). There is no confirmation from contemporaneous German sources.

to be exact : it is not a matter of some war time Allied propaganda :
I had many confirmations from German WWII pilots, who had engagements with the P-38,
that they called it with the nickname "Gabelschwanzteufel" which means fork tailed devil.
