You may have noticed some planes with the mention 'Enhanced with JERA sound'. The 'JERA sound' is a creation by dataroots who is a sound specialist. Dataroots has created sounds from dozen of planes that you can find in the download manager. Recently, he came with a new concept for Jet planes called JERA. It is already in use by many planes. I have asked Chris to give us more information about the JERA sound . Here it is:

THE 'JERA' CUSTOM SOUND SYSTEM FOR X-PLANE JETS

The 'JERA" sound system was a collaborative idea between Dataroots (Chris Wraight) and Mike Wilson of Wilson Aircraft, developed in early 2009.

The purpose of the system is to enhance the depth of custom sounds for jet aircraft in X-Plane, allowing a 'layered' effect to engine sounds and separating the engine whine (which is individual to each engine type) and the exhaust roar/crackle as two distinct elements, the latter not coming into play until thrust is increased from idle. At idle only the engine whine is heard. This better replicates the real world jet engine sound.

"JERA' stands for 'Jet Engine Rocket Assisted' and this is the key to how the system works. Additional rocket engines are added in Plane Maker, one for each jet engine the aircraft has. For example, a two jet-engined aircraft will have four engines, two of them rockets, a four jet-engined aircraft will have eight engines, four of them rockets.

Audio engineering can then be concentrated wholly on the individual jet engine sound (it's unique whine), replicating that engine at both idle and at full thrust. As before in the creation of custom jet engine sounds, much attention has to be given to the actual engine sound, to create as close a match as possible, including the changing of settings in the SFC/Sound tab to ensure the engine sound is correct at both idle and at full throttle.

After this is complete, attention can be focused on the four rocket engines. The sound for these is wholly roar/crackle, but once again the volume level and the type of roar/crackle has to replicate the actual exhaust levels/sound for that jet engine. It stands to reason that 1950s, 60s and 70s jets will be louder and more ear-splitting than jets fitted with hush kits or modern airliners using the latest jet engine technology.

Start up sounds are provided for each of the jet engines but, in actual fact, the rocket engines are always running, so do not need any starter or spool up sounds.

The rocket engines themselves are hidden. They are positioned exactly over the top of the jet engines (in Plane Maker). The exhaust nozzles for the rocket engines are set to zero (killing the blue flame graphic) and the thrust is set at a very low 10lb per engine, so that they have no effect on the aircrafts performance figures.

When the throttle is moved off idle, the rocket engine roar/crackle comes into play and 'overlays' the jet engine sounds. The result is a much higher level of immersive sound reality from aircraft fitted with the JERA system.

Early JERA custom sounds were tested for several months on Mike Wilson's DH/HS Trident 1e.

The first published plane on X-Plane,org with JERA sounds was Jacques Brault's PZL Belphegor. This has a single jet engine.

The first fighter fitted with JERA was Geiger's Swiss Venom.

Each JERA custom sound set has been exclusively developed for each of the above aircraft types. It can take several months of sound engineering and testing to get the sounds right.

The UK X-Plane Development Team (The B.O.F.F.I.N. Shed) continues to develop sound for X-Plane and is currently engaged in experimenting with sound hooks (dataref attachments) for aircraft and scenery sounds. If successful these will be released at some point in 2010. In the meantime, conventional custom sounds continue to be built for prop-engined planes across the spectrum of types.
